Aizawl, January 12 (NNN): The decomposed body of missing taxi driver, Chawnghmingthanga (36) who was untraced since December 8 last year was found. The dead body was recovered at Mizoram's Lengpui Airport road today. Police also arrested the person who killed the driver and sold the taxi. Laltanpuia (23) of Salem Veng in Aizawl was arrested by the police on January 11 and Chawnghmingthanga's dead body was recovered today. The news of Chawnghmingthanga missing incident was first noticed on December 8 by his family members, co-drivers and villagers. After an FIR was registered, police alongwith people from various hamlets in Aizawl launched search operation but to no avail.
Meanwhile, according to the Aizawl police Laltanpuia hired Chawnghmingthanga's taxi and went to Rangvamual area and drank liquor together at Thari's on the fateful night of December 8. Heated argument followed betweem them when Chawnghmingthanga asked for the taxi fare. The argument resulted in the death of the taxi driver. The culprit with the help of a folding knife killed the driver and thrown the body at Lengpui road. Laltanpuia changed the number plate of the taxi and re-coloured the taxi after the incident. Laltanpuia after having done the needed repairing of the taxi including the changing of the number plate and sold it to one Lalhmangaiha of Tuikual in Aizawl and then bought a second hand Maruti car bearing AS 01 G7116. In connection with the brutal murder of taxi driver, Mizoram Taxi Owners Assn, MPCC Driver Welfare and Mizo National Front (MNF) party demanded strong action against the culprit. Various organisations in the state have condemned the brutal act of Laltanpuia.
NE resolves to work jointly for power supply

Keeping in mind the need for sustainable power resource in the economic development of the region, the two day long 8th North Eastern Regional Power Committee meeting held here in Imphal has on Tuesday resolved to work jointly to improve power resource mobilization in the North Eastern Region.
Power minister of Nagaland, DY Sema and Tripura, Manik Dey and Manipur, Phungzathang Tonsing also attended apart from officials and engineers of power departments of seven north eastern states, Manipur, Nagaland, Assam, Tripura, Mizoram, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh in the meeting concluded today with state Chief Minister, O Ibobi Singh in the chair.
The meeting prominently discussed on the insufficient in power supply which is directly related with the slow in development passage which in turn affected to the economic development if the region.
Application of micro wave linking system for improving power distribution system and modification of the power distribution system of the NE region and sending for training in foreign countries were resolved in the meeting, the chairman of the committee, Chief Engineer, N Sharat of Manipur electricity department told.
Speaking on the occasion, Manipur Chief Minister, O Ibobi Singh said that the shortage of power has become a matter of concern of all North Eastern States as the must needed power demand for economic development is growing day by day.
"This has arrested the growth of economy in general and affected the quality of the life of people of this region particularly. Our concerted effort and thrust therefore, should be on the timely completion of power projects and the associated transmission systems interlinking the states of the region," Singh observed.
The demand will further increase after the completion of the flagship programmes of village electrification under the Rajiv Gandhi Grameen Vidyutikaran Yojana (RGGVY) in all the states and after implementation of accerlerated power development reforms programme-II, Ibobi observed and appealed all Central and State government organisations to explore all means to harness the untapped resources of power in the region.
He also informed the gathering that Manipur Government has decided to implement (3x22) 66 MW, Loktak Downstream Hydro Electricity Project from the fiscal year 2010-11 as a joint venture project with NHPC. Tipaimukh HEP (6x 250) MW is also finalized to take up by the state government with NHPC and Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam Limited.
He further expressed believed that the Central Sector Generating utilities, NEEPCO, NHPC, NTPC and OTPC will maintain strict schedule to commission their ongoing projects like Kameng HEP (600 MW). Lower Subansiri HEP (2000 MW), Bongaigoan (750 MW) and Pallatana (750 MW) respectively within scheduled commissioning time.
The commissioning of these projects at Pallatana and Bongaigoan will definitely improve the much needed base load, improved the thermal-hydro mix and transform the power scenario in the region during the dry seasons, Ibobi added.
