IMPHAl, March 26: The state cabinet in its meeting convened this afternoon has approved holding election for the Autonomous District Councils of the hill districts of the state, which have remained pending for the past two decades.
The meeting was chaired by the chief minister Okram Ibobi at his office chamber.
According to a reliable source, today's cabinet meet which started around 2 pm discussed the matters of holding election to the ADC which have remained frozen on account of unhealthy politicisation since past two decades.
The cabinet also finalised the date for holding the election, besides approving the conduct of the ADC elections in two phases.
The first phase of the elections, to be held on May 15, would cover Senapati, Sadar Hills and Chandel for which official notification has to be made on April 15 and April 23 will be last date for filling of nominations of candidature.
The cabinet also decided that the second phase of the election would be held on May 26 to elect members of the ADCs of Ukhrul, Tamenglong and Churachandpur.
For this April 22 will be the date for election notification and April 30 the date for filing of nomination, the source added.
Further the cabinet meet also approved to seek consent of the state Governor for the prorogation of the recently concluded 7th session of 9th Manipur Legislative Assembly which was adjourned sine die by the Speaker on February 11 last.(IFP)
