Mizos pay over Rs 5 crore per month as mobile phone bills

Aizawl, April 11: An economic survey of Mizoram, recently released by the government, estimated that the spent at least Rs 5 crores per month for a mobile phone bills. Till January 2010, there were 5,61,917 mobile phone subscribers in Mizoram which has a population a little more than 9 lakh, according to the economic survey.

"Assuming that each subscriber spends Rs 100 per month for mobile phone bills, the total expenditure of the consumers comes to more than Rs 5 crore," the source said. Mobile telephony was introduced in Mizoram in February by the BSNL.

"The mobile bills paid by subscribers in Mizoram have been estimated at the least possible amount. Some mobile phone users are paying as much as Rs 2,000 per month for the bills," said a source in the department. There are six service providers in Mizoram among which Airtel was the largest with 1,92,000 subscribers as on January 2010, followed by BSNL with 1,20,378 users. (UNI)
