Mizo church warning to homosexuals

6 Jun, 2010 TNN

AIZAWL: Terming homosexuality as against the tenets of Christianity, the Mizoram Presbyterian Church has threatened to excommunicate and suspend its homosexual members if they were found living together.

The decision was taken by the Synod Executive Committee, the highest decision-making body of the largest church in the state, during a meeting this week. According to church sources, the SEC decided to excommunicate and suspend its gay and lesbian members ''from the membership of the church if they lived together as husbands and wives''.

This is not the first time that the Mizo Church has come down on its homosexual members and kicked off a ontroversy. Last December, delegates of the Synod, the highest conference of the Presbyterian Church, felt that the present creed of the church was too lenient on homosexuals.

According to Church rules, "Two men or two women living together as married couples should be punished as a man or woman who commits adultery... and the punishment is suspension from the church membership for a period of six months."

Rain disrupts life in Mizoram

AIZAWL, JUN 5 (PTI): Incessant monsoon downpour which began during the last part of May caused widespread damage in parts of Mizoram as power supply lines and communication cables were snapped in many places. Officials said uprooted trees damaged power supply lines near Dampui village in Mamit district on Mizoram-Tripura border,

causing blackout in most of the villages for three days.
The power supply could not be resumed despite efforts of the state power and electricity department, officials said.
Incessant rain and bad weather prevented workers to repair the transmission lines, power department officials said.
Buarpui village and surrounding areas in Lunglei district were also experiencing the same fate as power transmission lines were snapped by strong winds.
Pre-monsoon and monsoon downpour accompanied by strong wind and hailstorm have created havoc in the state since the last part of March this year as more than 10,000 houses destroyed and 4,000 families rendered homeless.
Five people have been killed and 11 others injured the the storm-related incidents this year.
