IMPHAL, June 5(IFP): With an objective to made hill people of the state sustainable in production of seeds and other food items, for the first time in hill district, a Model Seed Village has been named.
The village is 10 HAC Sumchinvung village (Lamba camp) Churachandpur.
The village has benefited a trial cropping of Blackgram (T-9) which is expected to produce 10 tons.
The village host a training program on Integrated Crop Management (ICM) input assistance and technical support by the state agriculture department and ministry of agriculture Northest Council government of India.
While speaking at the training program Letkhogin Haokip, commissioner (agriculture) said resources for the hill people of the state are depended on cutting trees, collecting charcoals, by jhum cultivation, But today all this tree charcoal, and areas for jhumming have decreased day by day.
In order to live hill people need to take help through agriculture and its new technologies for sustainable production of food items, he said adding there would be no water without tree.
Ph Rajendro, deputy director agriculture department who himself is a soil chemist stated the large area in the hill district of Manipur are being used as Jhumming cultivation which however could not produce enough crop for sustenance.
He also said that awareness programme is being held to create message that more crop could be produce with little area.
Palendro also said this was first ever such programe held in Churachandpur district and such programe will continue in Senapati, Ukhrul, Tamenglong, Chandel district too.
