Lamka, Jun 5(TSE): Seeking to restore the many streams that had once adequately surged water to the current-ly water scarce residents here, the district administration in consultation with the Forest and PHE Departments today embarked on a mission under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Sche- me to restore the parched and barren catchment areas.
The unique mission which will entail above ten-thousand job card holders from two TD blocks of the district to plant over two lakhs saplings was ceremonially launched at YPA Headquarters hall, Hiang-tam Lamka with the three local elected representatives of the Congress party in attendance.
Minister in-charge of the district and MLA of CCpur AC, Phungzathang Ton-sing formally flagged off the mission while PHE Minister and Saikot MLA TN Haokip and his Henglep counterpart and the incumbent MTDC Chairman T Manga Vaiphei symbolically hand-ed over plant samplings to selected village chiefs.
The entire exercise of planting 2,09,646 saplings of assorted species including Bamboo, Quercus, Jack Fruit, Parkia Javanica (Yongchak) etc. is expected to take a week or two.
A total of 52.42 hectares of land; 23.74 hectares in Tuibuong TD block and 28.6740 hectares in Lamka TD Block will be covered, and for which an agreement to protect these areas have also been inked with the tribal chiefs.
Interestingly, when one of the Cabinet Minister requested some departments to show their faces to the public, the Forest Department was represented only by the DFO. The two Cabinet Ministers, ironically, have allegedly skipped a Cabinet meeting to attend the function.
