Mizoram rail project waits for green signal

AIZAWL, JUL 6 (AGENCIES):
The proposed railway extension from Bairabi to Sairang in Mizoram is awaiting the Centre's green signal with the final location survey (FLS) for the 50.90 km tracks having been completed.
Chairman of the Mizoram State Level Railway Task Force Zasanga said the report had been submitted to the Railway Ministry and works for railway extension would commence once the Centre gives a green signal.
The survey work was carried out by Rail India Technical & Economic Services (RITES) and had submitted the report to the railway ministry through the Northeast Frontier Railway general manager. Tender for construction will be floated after the approval of the survey, said Mr Zasanga.
He also pointed out that the railway extension project has run into a problem, which is allocation of the proposed railway station to the Cricket Association of Mizoram (CAM) for a cricket field.
A team, comprising of four MLAs-- Lalthansanga, K Liantlinga, Hmingdailova Khiangte and C Ramhluna-- and retired IRTS officer R K Thanga, has been set up, reported UNI.
The team will discuss the issue with Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla and CAM. Thanhawla has recently been appointed president of CAM. Sihhmui station has been planned to accommodate IOC depots and eight rail coaches. ''This will be a big boost to state government as fuel will be transported from Silchar with cheaper rates. The locations of the depots will be arranged by the deputy commissioner,'' Zasanga had earlier said.
''We are also looking into the possibility of constructing a railway station without disturbing the proposed cricket field. This minor problem will hopefully be solved within a month,'' he said.
Of the total budget, 75 per cent for the project is funded by the Centre, while the remaining 25 per cent by the Railway Ministry.
Though the railway project had started in 1997, it could not be completed due to several reasons, officials said.
