Indefinite bandh on against ‘no entry’

IMPHAL, May 5: Tamenglong based organisations have clamped an indefinite bandh on National Highway-53 in protest against the State Cabinet's decision to prohibit entry of NSCN (IM) general secretary Th Muivah into Mani-pur.
The bandh already enforced since 2.30 pm yesterday, is being called by Zeliangrong Students' Union, Manipur (ZSUM), Inpui Students Union and Zeliangrong Youth From (Assam, Manipur, Nagaland).
As a part of the agitation, traders of Noney and Tupul shut shutters even as suspected bandh supporters damaged four Tata Sumo heading towards Imphal from Jiribam, at Noney Bazar this morning.
Moreover, passenger carriers coming to Imphal side from Jiribam and Tamenglong district headquarters returned from where they had started the journey as passage through noney Bazar was impossible.
Some passengers descended from the vehicles and started to proceed on foot to their respective destinations.
Reports also suggest that several number of vehicles that left Imphal today returned from Tupul where a Tata Sumo was stoned damaging the wind-shield.
On the otherhand large banners welcoming the Naga rebel leader were put up at Noney and Tupul areas. The banners were inscribed 'Welcome to Th Muivah Ato Kilonser to our Homeland Nagalim'.
Posters with Muivah's photo were also put up at many places including at hotels and shops in Noney section of the NH-53.
The posters apart from condemning alleged 'terrorising of Naga people' also welcomed 'peace negotiator Th Muivah' on his proposed home coming.
Interacting with newspersons at Noney Bazar today, ZSUM's general secretary Chungthuingai Kamei and Inpui Students' Union general secretary James Inka expressed that Th Muivah's objective of coming to Manipur for his native village (Somdal) is to bring unity and promote peaceful co-existence among the hill and valley people and has no inimical intention as had been projected by the Government of Manipur.
While iterating that the ADC Act should be amended first before going ahead with the Council elections, they also demanded that decision of the State Cabinet to prohibit Muivah's entry be revoked so as to facilitate homecoming of the NSCN (IM) supremo.(TSE)

48 hrs bandh from 6 pm today

IMPHAL, May 5(TSE) : Objecting the proposed visit of NSCN (IM) general secretary Th Muivah to Manipur, All Manipur United Clubs' Organisation (AMUCO) has called a 48-hour general strike in protest against the approval given by the Government of India in this regard with effect from 6 pm tomorrow.
Moreover mass sit-in protests will be held all across the State from 6 am tomorrow, AMUCO said.
Announcing this during a press conference at its office here this evening, AMUCO president KT Rahaman informed that the decision to call the general strike has been adopted after a joint meeting of all the Clubs, Organisations and Meira Paibi bodies today. The meeting took serious note of the proposed visit of Muivah to Manipur and the implication behind the approval given by the Government of India.
The joint meeting also decided that the State Government should make necessary security arrangement to bring back all the passengers and vehicles stranded along the National Highways as soon as possible, Rahaman informed.
He further said that the decision of the Government of India to allow Muivah to visit Mani-pur is against the aspiration of the people of Manipur as it is in furtherance of the po-licy to encourage blood- shed among the brethren. So AMUCO strongly condemned the motive of the Government of India.
In order to avoid repetition of the June 18 incident, the Government of India should immediately intervene to stop Muivah from coming to Manipur, AMU-CO president demanded.
While lauding the measures taken up by the Go- vernment of Manipur to prevent entry of Muivah, the AMUCO president, however, cautioned that in case the stand is reviewed at the pressure of the Government of India, then the State Government would be held responsible for any eventuality.
Calling upon the people to stay alert, AMUCO president also appealed to them not to believe or spread false rumours.
