New Delhi, May 6 (PTI): Protesting against the Manipur government's move not to allow NSCN-IM leader T Muivah to visit the state, around 70 Naga students today tried to gherao the Manipur Bhawan here this evening. The students, who came in three buses, also resorted to sloganeering, decrying the Manipur government's refusal to allow Muivah to visit his ancestral village in Ukhrul district. "Around 60-70 Naga students came to stage the protest.
We have called in police to control the situation," Manipur government's Resident Commissioner in Delhi Shambhu Singh told PTI. During their protest, the Naga students demanded that Manipur Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh should be arrested along with Manipur Police commandos, who were posted along the Manipur-Nagaland border.
The Manipur government had declared that Muivah would not be allowed to visit Manipur but the NSCN-IM leader vowed to go ahead with his tour.
6 Naga MLAs of Manipur resign
NEW DELHI, May 6 – Even as a clueless Centre desperately tried to grapple with the situation in Manipur, at least six Naga MLAs of Manipur tendered their resignation from here in protest against the State Government's act and inaction of the UPA Government.
Falling short of demanding President's Rule in Manipur, the six MLAs who were in New Delhi to meet the Central leaders faxed their resignation to the Speaker of Manipur Assembly today, as Chief Minister, O Ibobi Singh hastily returned to Manipur after meeting top Central leaders including the Prime Minister.
The Manipur Chief Minister was reportedly summoned four times by the Centre before he heeded and landed in the capital. On Thursday he met Union Ministers Pranab Mukherjee, P Chidambaram and A K Antony and briefed them about the prevailing situation in his State in the wake of NSCN-IM leader T Muivah's proposed visit.
During the 20-minute meeting, Singh is understood to have told the Central leaders that if Muivah is allowed to go to Manipur, the situation in the State may deteriorate as people are against the visit of the Naga rebel leader.
The Central leaders are believed to have asked Singh to be cautious and take utmost care in handling the situation.
Meanwhile, W, Moruhg Makunga (Tenugopal), Awangbow Newmai (Tamei), K Raina (Tadubi), Dr Khashim Ruivah (Chingai), M Thohrii (Mao) and Wungnaoshang Keishing (Phungyar), all independent MLAs resigned from the membership of Manipur Legislative Assembly. There are 10 Naga MLAs in Manipur Assembly of which two belong to Congress Party including State Tribal Welfare Minister.
The MLAs said two of their colleagues, who were in Manipur, are likely to announce their resignation shortly.
Accusing Government of India of playing with the situation, the MLAs demanded judicial inquiry into the incidents of firing and deployment of Central forces in Imphal Valley. They said Naga people living in the Imphal Valley felt in-secure, as the State Government has withdrawn all forces and deployed them along the inter-state border with Nagaland.
Observing that the incident in Manipur may have an adverse impact on the Naga peace process, the MLAs claimed that they had pleaded with Manipur Chief Minister, O Ibobi Singh to reconsider the decision to ban Th Muivah's entry into Manipur.
The delegation of MLAs had landed in Delhi early this week to meet the Prime Minister and Union Home Minister to warn them of the situation in the Hill districts. However, they were not granted appointments and they had to make do with a meeting with interlocutor, R S Pandey, yesterday.(AT)
